LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Sailors and Friends ! In November Paul (VP Racing) and I were at the ISAF Meeting in Portugal. We had a chair in the ISAF Classes Committee. But more important was to watch the Women Forum, Women Committee, Event Committee and Council and their decisions about events at the Olympics. At the Women Forum there was a proposal  asking if the women should recommend a women lightweight singlehanded dinghy. I was very surprised to see that the women voted against a lightweight singlehanded dinghy. The Women Committee decided that if they should race in keelboat, it should be match racing. After that they voted for the doublehanded high performance, and no keelboat. The Event Committee recommended that the women at the Olympics should race in a doublehanded high performance, and no keelboat. The last day the ISAF Council decided (what to me looks like overruling) that the women should race the same events (as at the last Olympics) and sail matchrace instead of fleet in Yngling. I must say I am shocked. My opinion was that ISAF would try to find more modern and more attractive classes to race at the Olympics. But no change for the ladies. FROM NEW ZEALAND Confirmed events for the season to date. The first post Olympic era North Island Champs  hosted by the Napier Sailing Club 1-2 December. For you north islanders this has been  your opportunity to get some good fleet  sailing  in  because Napier already has a resident Europe fleet there. 7 races were scheduled. The South Island Champs, hosted by the Ashburton yacht club, took place on 10-11 November. NZ Champs are at Pigeon Bay 23-24 February. As for the Special Event races, the nominated events are the L. Mahinapua regatta 26-27 January, and the Charteris Bay Yacht Club Marathon 29 March. Masters Games: Dates: Saturday 2nd February to Monday 4th February 2008. Venue: Otago Yacht Club. Tom Arthur

IMPRESSIONS FROM THE 2007 YOUTH EUROPEAN CHAMPION Finland is far from Biscarosse where the regatta was held. My boat had been travelling from Finland via Workum already from the beginning of July. We had quite many boats coming from Finland. When I saw the place where the races will be held I realized that this place suits me. The sailing venue was a small lake that means no waves and shifty wind conditions. Also it meant that the wind wasn't as strong as it was at the ocean. That's why I could expect very difficult conditions that give possibilities also for the smaller sailors to succeed well as almost anything can happen during the races. The conditions were really much the same as we have in the lakes in Finland. Especially in a small lake near Helsinki called Tuusulanjärvi where I use to sail one regatta every spring and autumn. The experiences I have got from these races there gave me also advantage considering the upcoming regatta. Therefore it was really easy to start the regatta as I was quite self-confident. We had our accomodation quite far from Biscarosse so it took pretty long time to drive every morning to the club. That's why it was very good that the organisation committee had decided that the first start wasn't before two o'clock. Usually the wind picked up at three o'clock and this gave us also some time to chat with other sailors. Despite the difficult wind conditions the race committee did great job as they got even nine races of planned ten. It was quite weird to lead the regatta from the very beginning to the end. After the first start I finally discovered that this will end well. I was very confident through the regatta because I didn't have any bad positions. Whereas many good sailors had taken their discards already after the two first days. Before the last day I had pretty strong 7 points lead to Michael Hansen and 9 points to Marc Terasa Pol. That meant if there is only one start on the last day the only one who can beat me is Michael so my plan was to watch him a bit on the first race but also try to sail as well as possible considering the second race. My discards were also better than anyone else's so match racing against me wouldn't have been a good choice. The last race didn't go as I planned. I took too safe start whereas Marc got the first gust few boats to the left. I struggled the first upwind and I was around 30 on the first upwind mark. At that time Marc was in the top 5 but Michael was behind me. On the second upwind I tried to sail more against the wind and once I let Michael to sail more to the left than I did. I thought that he can't pass me from there because we were already so much on the left side but somehow he passed me before the second upwind mark. I thought the next race would be very tough because we would be very close to each other in the points. I felt very disappointed sailing the last upwind to the finish but around 20 meters before the finish I saw the A flag flying in the finishing vessel. I immediately realized that I would win but anyway somehow I didn't feel the same. After a couple of hours I felt already very happy as I had done a good job along the competition and I could enjoy the prize giving. For me this was already second European Championship, the first was 2005 in Helsinki. This means for me a lot as the sceptics can't say that the first time was due to light weight and good luck only. Here in the cold Finland it's nice to remember those sunny and warm days in Biscarosse as the thermometer readings start to fall below the zero, snow cover the land and ice cover the seas. LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Sailors and Friends, Many congratulations to our new Worlds - Youth - and European champions as well as the Veteran Cup's winner. You did all a fantastic race. It was great to see how many sailors took part, and how many new sailors that have showed up at the major events. I believe the youth is our future, so in that way it is my opinion that the Europe Class is developing very well. But I was very sad to see that there was no one outside Europe taking part at the Worlds. In the future there will be, as a principe, no Europeans when the Worlds are organised in Europe. I hope everyone in the Class will be great ambassadors for the Class and actively work to attract and welcome new sailors. FROM BRAZIL We had the second part (of five) of our local championship (Campeonato Pernambucano da Classe Europa 2007 - Europe Class Pernambucan Championship 2007). The first one was on July 8th, the second one on August 19th. We have 6 registered boats, 5 at the water so far. Our next day of races will be October 10th. We have good news about a new fleet in Bahía (the 2000 Worlds place). Finally we were able to call some old sailors and bring new ones to make a small fleet with 4 boats. They're racing in some big regattas there and as soon as possible they'll have a local championship (and I hope I'll be able to go there and race too). And for last, we are working hard so that we can make a National Championship again, now that we have more boats in other state. Our hopes are for the first semester next year, around March ! FROM NEW ZEALAND Extracts from the New Zealand Newsletter "Looking forward is the thing at the moment, as there hasn't been much sailing activity in New Zealand over the last few months -looking forward to the three big events during the next season (the South Island Championships, the Canterbury Championships and the New Zealand Chanpionships), as well as all your local club events. The support for these events last season was very encouraging, so I hope to see you all on the water again this next season. For those who are aged enough, there is also the Master Games in Dunedin in February - entry is still open, and there's room for more Europe's on the start line, so don't be shy. Tom Arthur has promised to sail with a sea anchor for this event, so that might make a difference." Colin Rossie "The NZ Championship date is the only confirmed champs date I have at the time of going to print,  23-24 February 2008 at Pigeon Bay. The S.I.and Canterbury champs are still under negotiation, and any "special events" are still to be discussed. FROM ITALY The Italian Championships have ended the 2007 sport season. The adopted strategy in 2007 to maintain the Europe Class in Italy at its right level of importance gave good results. Various young sailors, coming from the Optimist Class answered to our invitation, transmitted by an adequate promotion which made the different clubs and their coaches aware of their responsibilities. We would have like that the young sailors number starting in our Class would have been similar to our effort. In spite of the great number of young sailors who attended the Optimist Class, few of them carried on with the sailing sport once the optimist cycle ended. In order to ease the sport activity of the young people, the Europe Class in agreement with the Italian Sailing Federation, advanced the passage from the Optimist to the Europe at the age of 12. On an other hand, we could notice a discomfort amongst the sailors who left the Europe Class for the Laser Class, which obtained the Olympic status. A return of these sailors to the Europe Class is difficult, even if many of them recognize to have done a wrong election leaving our Class. Anyhow, it is always necessary to restate the Europe dinghy qualities, a boat for very young sailors able to form helsmen perfectly ready to compete further on in other superior classes. Following this line, the promotion of the Europe Class is directed towards the attention of the youngest, easying the Class activity, supporting as well the international activity in organizing important events as the Youth Championships. The economical situation is not of the best for the sailing activities. A substantial financial support is always more necessary to promote continuous and systematic events in a way to motivate the youngests in participating constantly in a serious sport competition. The Asseuropa will not desist in following all the possible ways to realize its own constitutional purposes and thus to favour the sailing sport practice, above all the youth one, with an ample vision on a complete formation of the sport spirit as a guide and support for an healthy growth of our youngests. During October will take place the yearly Asseuropa AGM. The 2008 calendar and activities will be set. The new Board will be voted. I am sure that the new Board will follow the tradition of the association: sole interest for the youngest sailors and the sailing sport. Claudio Morana President ASSEUROPA

2008 Youth European Championship                  EUROPE CLASS Centro Vela Alto Lario - Como Lake - Italy The 2008 International Europe Class Youth European Championship will be held in Gravedona, Como Lake, Italy at the CENTRO VELA ALTO LARIO. Como Lake is one of the most beautifull lakes in Italy, situated about 1 hour driving from Milano. The event would be held there in early August 2008. The Centro Vela Alto Lario is used to organise international events, both for dinghies (like 470s and Lasers) and for keel boats (like Star class). The wind conditions are usually thermical wind, increasing during the day up to 15-16 knots in the afternoon. Accomodation is insured by camping areas from 100 m to a few km, and some hotels within a walking distance from the club. Nearest international airports are Malpensa and Orio ( Bergamo ) with direct flights from almost everywhere. Also low cost airline Ryanair have direct flights from all Europe. ORGANIZING A EUROPE WORLDS, HELL OF A JOB, BUT CERTAINLY WORTH IT. When I am writing this the Worlds have just ended and I think we can look back at a successful event. The weather tried really hard to blow us away or flood us, however all planed races are sailed, we have two new champions: Svenja Puls (GER) and Mathias Mollat (NOR) and above all there was a good atmosphere. So thanks to the sailors, parents, friends, sponsors and volunteers, your really made the event to a success. Mick Mainemare asked me to tell something about the organization of this year's Worlds. I can tell you the complete story, however I am not going to bore you with all the details. Interested people can always contact me via the IECU if they have special questions. To my opinion you can split the organization period up into 4 parts: the pre- election phase, finding funding, the actual planning and during the event itself. Looking back we started the pre-election phase about half a year for the AGM. A petit committee of three persons decided that it was time again for a big event in The Netherlands as promotion of the Class. With the reducing fleets in the Netherlands and Belgium and the loss of the Olympic status it was time to show that the Europe Class was still alive and kicking. Hence our slogan "It is time to wake up" and the joint organization with the Belgians. We selected days that every sailor in Europe would be able to come and contacted our favored Race Committee, sailing Club Workum. To get elected we promoted the event via flyers, a presentation and verbally by the Dutch and Belgium sailors. All the work in this phase can be done by 3 very enthusiastic persons. When the Worlds were given to us by the AGM about a litlle more than 2 years before the start of the event the real work started. A bigger organization was needed so we had to search for persons that were willing to commit themselves for 2 years to the event organization. Two years seems really a long at that time, but it proves to be very short if you want to do a decent job. The first year there is actually only one real task: finding funding in what ever way possible. Subsidiaries have to be requested as soon as possible. Possible sponsors contacted,etc,etc. This year's organization was really happy and lucky with the sponsorship of Electrabel. Next to this fundraising a website can be built and a Notice of Race should be put together to be distributed in the large Europe events the year before. Not to be underestimated is the recruiting of the Jury. There seems to be a real shortage of judges with experience on dinghy's and a positive track record. With the necessary basic funding in the bag, the program of the event can be filled, social events planned, goodies and prices ordered, Sailing Instructions put together, finding volunteers, etc. This is a lot of work which requires at least 8 persons if you still want to see some daylight next to your school or job. When the actual event then start the big lines should be planned and only small things have to be taken care of. The most important thing is that your volunteers (we had about 35 of them) are happy. The same applies for the Race Comittee and Jury. If they are happy big chance the sailors will be too and you will have a great event. Until so far the brief summary of what was done during the organization of this year's World Championships. Organizing one of the large events in the Europe Class, YEC, EC and WC is a great chance to put the Europe Class back on the map in your country or region. WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS 14-26 JULY 2007 - WORKUM, THE NETHERLANDS Dear Sailors, When I am writing this there are only so many days left until the open week will start and the event is taking shape. Everything related to core of the event, the races, has almost been arranged. We especially took care of the selection process of the jury members. We wanted to have some enthusiast young persons preferably with dinghy experience so that we hopefully would have a fair and sensible rule 42 enforcement. Next to this the quality of the races is guarantied by the experienced racing comity of WSV Workum. Last year they hosted the Optimist Europeans and if you can handle that than you can handle the Europe class easily. So everything is setup for the basic event. For further information and the notice of race please visit our website at: www.wkeurope2007.com  The registration will be opened as of now. However we are of the opinion that racing is only half the event. It should also be a social happening, something that has been neglected the past years to our opinion. There should be more interaction between the sailors. This is why we have negotiated with the camping that the sailors can camp with a tent or camper on the stroke of land besides the beach. This is outside of the camping next to the event terrain and camping there will be cheaper than on the camping it self. Please mention this when you make a reservation in fact reservations will not be needed since there will be space enough. Sailors interested in bungalettes or other housing have to be really quick. In the summer Workum is quite crowded with tourists. There will also be the possibility to get breakfast/lunch and dinner for a decent price. Thanks to our main sponsor Electrabel, an energy company, we are also able to plan social events next to the opening and closing ceremony. As I write this our social committee is really busy thinking up al kinds of crazy things and at least the closing ceremony will include a surprise, which is a secret even for me. LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Sailors and Friends,  A new season is just in front of us. I expect many of you have been training during for the year. Now it is time to measure what you have learned. All the organisers of the major events are now ready, and I hope to see a lot of old and new friends at the regattas. I am looking forward to see if we get new stars. Last year it was decided that IECU in principle should apply for Olympic status as soon as possible. If we shall do that it is very important that you all work for this goal in your respective countries. We need your guidance. Please, let the IECU board or the Working Party know your inputs, how do you think we can make the Europe Class more attractive to ISAF. You must remember that the Europe Class belongs to you members, not to the IECU Council, so you have to be active. I am very happy and proud to tell you, that the Europe Class in Brazil is on the map again. I wish good luck to all volunteers and sailors there, and hope you will get a good organisation, a big fleet, and that Brazilian sailors will show up at the Worlds again. FROM NEW ZEALAND To many of our fellow sailors, our country must seem like a distant outpost in the Europe Dinghy world, that is, until Emirates Team NZ has brought us to the forefront of world attention. At the time of writing this article, we are in the period after the Luis Vuitton finals and before the AC racing begins. In NZ the live coverage starts around midnight and finishes about 3 am, even so, many of the Europe sailors here have been up during those ungodly hours watching it live. We Kiwis are unanimous in our support for ETNZ, so you can imagine our anticipation for the first race to compare Alinghi & ETNZ's boat speed. In our country we are in the middle of winter so sailing has shut down in the colder South Island, but our friends in the North Island still have a climate warm enough to carry on a reduced winter series. This is the time for holding our AGM, and planning all the venues, dates, etc... for next season regattas. The AGM voted in Colin Rossie as new president giving Ross McGregor a well earned rest after many years in the job. Last summer was characterised by a huge turnaround in boat ownership. Almost all the owners who were prominent during the Olympic era and who were no longer using their boats have found willing buyers. This has resulted in a spread of those top boats around the country. Last season Dunedin, which is our most southern, from absolutely no boats now has a fleet of six. Napier, a north island city, almost matched them with a growth from one to five. In NZ the Europe fleet is certainly in a healthy state even though I doubt we would have any sailors of world class, our register of known boats is around the 65 figure, and we are still unearthing boats we never had any record of, mainly due to the incredible sleuthing capabilities of Katy Wylam and Antje Mueller who have proved to be great ambassadors for the class in NZ. Last summer, Katy in her ambassadorial role introduced a fellow Napier club sailor, Mark Kenah, to Europe sailing. We are glad to report this has progressed to the happy state of an engagement, with wedding plans underway. Our other ambassador Antje, with her partner Andy Greager are the first NZ sailors for many years to sail Europes overseas, while on a visit to Antje's homeland, Germany, they were both sailing in the Keil regatta. As always, we send all our fellow sailors around the world our greetings, although we haven't got to the stage of setting up our own website, we do like keeping up with you all vía yours. FROM NEW ZEALAND New Zealand is still in it’s summer season and so far the provincial Canterbury championships and the South Island championships have been held. By the time this article goes to print we will have completed the National championships, scheduled for 17-18th February. This will be the first time the Nationals have been held since the loss of Olympic status, in fact the last date on the trophies is 2003. Over the last two years there has been a lot of boats changing owners and the NZ fleet now numbers 64 that we have traced so far, so this contest will enable us to meet our fellow sailors around the country who otherwise would remain a disembodied email message. When looking at the gallery pictures of the World Champs, I was bemused to compare how young the competitors were compared to the sailors here. The majority of us are well over 35, some even in their 60’s, but I am pleased to report we have increasing numbers of women again in what for the last few years was strictly male dominated. 2007 NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIPS 1. Looking on all the major events it is our opinion that the Class should focus on fewer events. We propose (from 2008) to leave out the Europeans if the Worlds are held in Europe. This should give the arranging club a larger number of sailors to work with and it would focus the sailors on fewer events. During the winter (and yes we are sailing all year!) quite some of our most experienced sailors have left the Class for other boat types. We find this in line with a natural development of the sailors. The number of new sailors joining the Europe Class is still good and for sure we still have a lot of very good sailors in the Class, as well as the talent among the new ones are of high potential. We will start the competitions this year with more than 50 Danish sailors participating in the Garda meeting at Easter and continuing with a training week where more than 10 nordic sailors will participate as well. Denmark will be arranging the Nordic Youth this year, the venue will be Arhus. We are also trying to arrange a Nordic which will be open for everybody. We are at this moment struggling with finding a club who can arrange this and further on find the right 3 days, more or less  impossible with all the other events, We will arrange our 4 ranking events during the year and we would be very happy to welcome any Europe sailor to these event. However the responses from the National Class Organisations have been very few and none of the larger Europe Nations has reacted. On this background the Working Committee cannot operate as suggested. We find it rather problematic that we don’t develop the Class with greater enthusiasm. We are sure that a lot can be done regarding the Class Rules, the equipment, the racing format, etc..) It is our firm believe that no development will result in a decreasing number of sailors. We hope the situation will be  well discussed at the coming AGM. LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Friends and Sailors, A long winter in Europe is over. Finland is out of the ice again, and the summer can begin. I have heard that a lot of new sailors have started in the Europe Class this year. It is very important for a class to get new sailors, so a very big welcome to all of you. You will not regret the choice. You will have a lot of fun at the regattas. Some of you will become great sailors. Lots of the Olympic sailors have started their career in the Europe Class. There is room for everyone in the class. I expect that this year will show the same level of sailors and countries in IECU. At the Wolrds we'll know exactly how the situation is. I hope to meet a lot of you at the Worlds in Holland, Europeans in Spain, Youth in France. They all have made real great preparation this year. I hope more of you will take part in this year AGM. Remember the IECU "belongs" to the members, not to the board. Remember also to take part in the Technical and Racing Forum. I hope you all will get good winds this summer. See you somewhere. FROM THE USA The weather has been very stormy in the Pacific Northwest this winter, so we haven’t done much sailing. We are sorry that one of our fleet members, Sebastian Barg, is moving to the UK this summer, but he is taking his Europe with him, so perhaps some of you will see him on the water. FROM BELGIUM Spring is coming. The Class is growing. New members start or re-start sailing Europe. It is a new feeling to have and become  “older” (what’s in a name) members. Anyway the Class grows, lives and we adapt our program. As we are a small country, we cooperate closely with the Dutch Class in trainings and regattas. And of course also in organising the World Championships 2007 at Workum (Netherlands) in July. Before, not only as training, the Dutch Class is organising the Dutch Open Championship at Workum (12-13 May). Belgian sailors will be present and you ? Frans van Pelt President

FROM ITALY The first sport appointment has taken place at Andora (Liguria) on March 3-4 followed by Sinigallia (Adriatic) on March 17-18. Every fifteen days will be performed another national qualification regatta and the program will conclude in May. As support of the 6 qualification regattas various trainings will be organised as part of the area activity wishing to recall that the Europe Class is present in all the national territory. Much expectation for the IECU initiative in favour of the Europe Class through the presence and authoritative intervention of its executive members in all possible sailing sport head meetings overseas. For the moment, the important fact is to avoid sinking in oblivion and this is the big concern of all the leaders of the Class holding a constant commitment until the end of their responsibility. FROM ARGENTINA The 2007 Summer Championship took place at the Ciudad de Mar del Plata from February 7th to 10th. 12 Europe dinghies attended the Championship with a previsted fight between Ronnie Jenkins, local sailor, and I. The first day the 13 knots wind has blown N-NE with a light tendency to turn to NE towards the right hand side of the reach. I tacked to the right hand side of the course looking for a shift which didn’t happen, so I tacked again to pass in front of the fleet and Ronnie approaching left hand side took advantage of some small shifts; I passed the windward mark first followed by Ronnie and then the rest of the fleet. Downwind I did an error with the currents and Ronnie caught me up. Passing the leeward mark, near one to the other, Ronnie gybed first and I sailed following the same strategy. Unfortunately the wind began to lightly shift and Ronnie took advantage of it and passed first at the windward mark. In the reach we were separated by an 8 lengths distance and Ronnie won this first regatta. Due to a wind coming from ashore and enforcing to 25 knots, the R.O. cancelled the following scheduled races of the day. A shame as the sailors who were still at sea would have enjoyed sailing. Next day, three regattas were completed with a 15/18 knots steady wind. In the first regatta it happened nearly the same as the day before. Ronnie won and I finished 2nd very near. In the two last regattas, Ronnie escaped and took the lead, 30 seconds aprox. In front of me and one minute of the fleet. Rain for the third day and so little wind... After going out at sea and waiting 40 minutes the R.O. decided to go back ashore, scaring clouds appearing at NW. Once ashore all the races of the day were cancelled. Last day saw a 25 knots wind and at 10:30 a.m. all the races were cancelled, so early... At 9 p.m. took place the Prize-Giving Ceremony, the three first classified received a trophy. FROM THE UK We have just finished the Dinghy Sailing Show in London where we had two Europes on display that attracted a lot of interest with many visitors. I am hoping for another successful year for the Class. For two years in a row there has been a big increase in the fleet at the UK Championships, and this year there should be more than thirty boats. The Championship is at Weymouth (venue for the 2012 Olympic Sailing) on 9th and 10th June, with two days of training before the event. Of course, the UK Championship is an open event for Europes everywhere and  we will always welcome visiting Europes from other countries. The venue has great facilities and we are a very friendly crowd of sailors! There is also an event at Alton Water on May 5th and 6th. This is near to the ferry ports of Harwich and Felixstowe so it is easy for you to visit! We share this event with the Splash Class, so we would like to have a bigger fleet of Europes than Splashes! This year we will have sailors from the UK at both the World and European Championships. I hope they will have some success and I am sure they will make lots of friends.
