![]() I got a copy of the letter of Michael Cholewa to the Nordic countries. Is it possible for you to place this quote of the letter on the Europe website? I have asked Michael’s permission for this. <START QUOTE> I had a lengthy discussion with Rudy den Outer from Vintage Yachting Games a few days ago concerning the upcoming Vintage Regatta at Como in July, where the Europe class, as an old Olympic class, has been invited as well. I think this regatta represents an excellent opportunity to activate some of the smaller E class countries, and I think it is important that the “big” E class countries share the responsibility to continue to grow the Europe Class by supporting all activities as much as we can. My thinking is that we should try to make this event, the vintage games, even bigger and more prestige’s than the Worlds , where you, as a sailor, have the option to qualify through the backdoor (open week) and that “door” is really open. It is fairly easy to qualify to the Worlds, but the case about Vintage should be different. In Denmark we plan to give the 4 slots to our best sailors (top of ranking – 2 men/2 girls) and we plan to support them financially as well. <END QUOTE> The Vintage Yachting Games Organization is a non-commercial joint venture of the following former Olympic Classes (Vintage Yachting Classes): Europe, 12’ Dinghy, O-Jolle, Flying Dutchman, Yngling, Tempest, Soling, Dragon and 5.5 Metre. Her supervisory board consists of the Presidents/Chairmen of above classes. Regards, Rudy den Outer Chairman S: vintageyachtinggames W: www.vintageyachtinggames.org |

![]() Tobias Hemdorff win the Grand Prix Vila de Blanes - SPAIN - The Danish sailor Tobias Hemdorff is the winner of the International Grand Prix Vila de Blanes after a fought last racing day in the Europe class with only one single point from Ibiza's sailor Nicklas Veith. Tobias had to control and neutralize attacks from his closest rivals, like the local sailor Albert Codinachs, the last year's winner of the Grand Prix who also won the last race, and Ivan Moreno, who did an excellent last racing day scoring a 3rd and a 2nd. At the end Tobias Hemdorff has got the highest level of the podium, Nicklas Veith, second and Ivan Moreno the third. The fourth position was Albert Codinachs, CV Blanes, and fifth Juan Calvo, sailor of the RCN Denia. The French Sylvian Notonier was sixth, followed by Ascension Roca who became the winner of the women classification. ![]() Dear Europe friends, As I mentioned in my previous mail the entry for the VYG is opened. This event, apart from the ambition of being the replacement for your Olympic event, is also a showcase for the participating classes. Make sure your class will be an eye catcher during the Vintage by entering as many as possible delegates per country to the event. As you know the entry has two phases. First the counties have to pre-enter (claim) their expected number of delegates on our website. Please do this as soon as possible on our Italian website: http://www.infowave.it/vintage2012/Entry_Form.html. Then in the second phase (10-JAN-2012 – 31-MAY-2012) the teams can be entered by name and sail number. From our website you can also download a nice printable calendar for 2012. It comes in three sizes: Small (letter), Medium (A4) and Large (A3). Please feel free to distribute the Vintage Yachting Games calendar 2012 to the Europe sailing community or to other interested parties. Just download from, or give a pointer to: http://vintageyachtinggames.org/ITA2012/?page_id=185. One more thing about the prizes of the event. Besides the event prizes, daily prizes, VIP trophy and country trophy there are perpetual trophies for each class. These trophies has the names of the Olympic victors engraved on the back, symbolizing the Olympic past. On the foot the names of the Vintage Yachting Games winners will be engraved, symbolizing the continuation of the class. In that respect the winners of the Vintage Yachting Games will be expanding the direct line from the 1992 – 2004 Olympic victors. The Vintage Yachting Games Organization is a non-commercial joint venture of the following former Olympic Classes (Vintage Yachting Classes): Europe, 12’ Dinghy, O-Jolle, Flying Dutchman, Yngling, Tempest, Soling, Dragon and 5.5 Metre. Her supervisory board consists of the Presidents/Chairmen of above classes. Looking forward to receive you entries and meeting you all at Lake Como, Rudy den Outer Chairman

![]() RESULTS THE INTERNATIONAL GRAND PRIX VILA DE BLANES - 2-5.1.2011 - CLUB VELA BLANES, SPAIN With sailors coming from 7 Nations ( ESP - FRA - DEN - SWE - POL - BEL - GER ) this regatta that is becoming a classic in our calendar was succesfully sailed in Blanes, north east of Spain, at the beggining of the year. Winds were not too strong this year, but 5 races could be completed by the fleet. The youth sailors are pushing very strong and the best in Blanes were our actual Youth European Champions 2010, Albert and Anne Line. This regatta, together with the Regate de Noel in France at the end of the year, is a perfect option for winter sailing in the south. Think on it next season! ![]() 2008 WORLD CHAMPION’S IMPRESSIONS I got my driving licence in the beginning of the year 2008 which made travelling a lot easier this year. Actually I drove our team’s boats from Madrid to Portugal. As we had only three sailors from Finland competing in the Open Week and four in the Worlds we didn’t have a proper coach for the regattas. However we had a rib on the water since the third day of the Open Week, which in the end was quite much I needed. As we didn’t have a coach for the regatta I wanted to get familiar with the weather and circumstances already before the Open Week. That’s why we were with Petter in Vila Real de Santo Antonio already five days before the Open Week. We were very lucky that the Italian team had arrived already on the previous day and thanks to Raffaele Ravaglia we could train and learn the conditions with them. I believe these trainings bore fruit on the last day of the Worlds when the conditions were a bit different. We also had nice conversations with Raffaele about the weather, current, racing, etc. I think it was important that I could discuss with him and he gave me good tips about the conditions. My plan for the Open Week was to learn more about the weather and try to sail a bit more aggressively. It didn’t seem to be good tactic as I got an OCS already on the second start. I think I was a bit confused about the wind on the first days, as it didn’t act as I had expected. On the 3rd and 4th day I started to be more certain about the sides. In the end I managed to climb to the fourth place, which was very good considering I had taken an OCS already on the first day. The best thing about the Open Week was however that I had learnt from my many mistakes and I had got better understanding about the conditions on the race course. I managed to do the measurement things already on the same day as the Open Week ended, which was very good as we competed in the Nations Cup on the “lay day”. I think the Nations Cup was good for our team spirit and we were ready to start racing on the following day. The Worlds started with a strong breeze from the sea. The wind was a bit different we had experienced earlier and it made me a bit confused. The first race was pretty bad due to a bad start and wrong side on the first beat. Luckily I managed to get a decent result from the second race. After all I wasn’t too worried after the first day as it was still a lot better than in the Open Week! The second day looked like a normal” day when we headed to the race course. I decided to trust my instinct and not to stick with the plans made before the Worlds. I took good starts in both races and therefore I had all options open on the first beats. This made racing a lot easier compared to the first day. Trusting my instinct seemed to pay off and I had a brilliant day with both races in the top five. On the third day the wind was calmer than on the previous days. Before the first start the wind was something like 50 degrees more left than on any other day before. I could predict the wind to turn to the right as it did few hundred meters before the first mark. I took all the advantage of this and I was second at the first mark. I kept my place and finished second. The wind picked up a little bit for the next start and I managed to get a nice start from the middle of the start line. I sailed long clean lines and came 6th to the first mark. I passed a couple of boats on the reach and downwind finishing 3rd in that race. Going to the lay day I had climbed already to the second place. I had managed to get the reliability to my sailing and improved a lot from the first day. On the lay day I fixed some scratches that I had got to my boat and I checked that the bottom of the boat was clean. I also had a nap on the beach and prepared myself for the last challenging days. The fourth day was the first day since we came that we could see clouds. Anyway the clouds didn’t have any effect on the sea breeze, which built up as usually. In both races I took very good and certain starts from the middle of the start line. I could follow what the fleet was doing and I had the race under control after the first tack to the port. In the second start I lost few places during the second downwind but anyway one brilliant day for me. At shore it was really nice to see that I had taken the lead. It looked like I had put some heat on Kristian. We two were a bit separated from the rest of the fleet in the points. The fifth day was the same kind of day as the third and fourth. Actually my notes of the day were: “Normal day. Left side was better”. Once again I took the starts from the middle and made it to the first mark with four or six tacks. No problem on the downwind either and I extended my overall lead by three points. What’s more important than the points was that my both discards were the two races from the first day! Both of my discards were better than Kristian’s as well as my third worst. That meant he couldn’t match race against me on the last day. The land breeze had become stronger and stronger since the lay day but sea breeze had always beat the land breeze. Anyway now the forecasts were saying that there might be a great chance that the next day the land breeze would be so strong that the sea breeze couldn’t turn it over. It really looked like the weather was going to change for the last day so everything could still happen. As the forecast had predicted the land breeze was strong in the morning. The first start for the girls was at 1 pm. There couldn’t be any warning signal after 3 pm. Therefore my plan for the first race was to stick pretty close to Kristian so that I would have good position before the possible second race. On the race course the wind was about 10 m/s from the land. I think that Kristian hadn’t sail with the land breeze as he didn’t attend the Open Week. That’s why I was very confident before the race. I was all the time aware of the wind change but it didn’t happen during the first race. The women started first and it looked that they got a good lifter from the right hand side. I started at the Race Committee boat and turned to the right pretty quickly after the start. I tried to stay more in the middle of the race course compared to Kristian who went to the right corner. The right paid and on the first mark I was few position behind Kristian. At the gate I broke my sail as another sailor’s boom hit my sail. I decided to continue although the crack was 50 cm long. I lost a few places sailing the upwind and my troubles continued on the reach when my kicker broke! I managed to finish 19th whereas Kristian finished 8th. So I was still leading by two points. I managed to quickly change the broken sail to another one. I didn’t have time to fix the kicker properly as the warning signal came. I lifted the sail when there was only four minutes to the start and barely made it to the start line in time. I considered the situation and I realised that I had to finish right behind kristian or better and not worse than 16th. I decided to sail my own race and pay little attention to Kristian: The wind strength had dropped dramatically and I realised that the wind was probably going to turn. Anyway I started more from the right side of the start line. It was obvious that now the left side would pay and I made my decision. I let Kristian go to the right and headed to the wind on left. It worked and I was around fifteenth on the first mark while Kristian was far back. I managed to keep my position to the gate although my kicker snapped right after the upwind mark. I gained about ten places on the second upwind and lost a few on the reach as I didn’t have the kicker. On the downwinds I had to sail broad reach as I couldn’t let the sail go further than 45 degrees. To make it even more exciting both men and women came at the same time to the outer loop upwind mark and the last downwind was really a mess. It was really difficult to count the places and I wasn’t hundred per cent sure about my position in the finish. I soon realised that I was in the top ten which was enough as Kristian had retired the race. In Finland I got acknowledgement for my achievement for instance from the President of the Republic, Tarja Halonen. She invited me to the Independence Day reception at the Presidential Palace. This year I was the only sailor who had got the honour to be there. I believe that the Europe Class is the perfect class for younger sailors. It gives you great basis for the future Olympic classes and it’s awesome that sailors of wide range of weight can sail it even-handedly. Best regards to all Europe sailors. Teemu Rantanen |

![]() FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Sailors and Friends, The last years there has been no ice in the harbours in But in the middle of winter it is rather dark at daytime. The worst days it is not getting really light. That is in one way wonderful, because when it is springtime, it gets light at daytime and the temperature rises 10 degrees. One can hardly wait to come out sailing. The feeling is the same if it is a keelboat or a dinghy. It is very clear that the Europe now is sailed much in Europe, and very little outside I hope a lot of you will show up to all the major events, including the Vintage Games in I wish a lot of fun and good winds for you all this season. Best regards. Jan Abrahamsen President IECU

![]() THE EUROPE CLASS AT THE OLYMPICS ISAF has received applications from different Classes, also from the EUROPE CLASS, to be elected as the Single Handed Dinghy for the 2012 Olympic Games. In their Annual General Meeting in Now we need that the National Europe Class Unions do their work and ask their National Authorities - Federations - to support our application and make a "Submission" to ISAF's Meeting asking that the Europe will be back at the Olympics. Without the National Authorities support, the election will be very hard to win against the Radial so please make sure that your Federation works in our favour. |
![]() FROM UK The Europe season in the UK has had a few problems with the weather. Our first event at Burghfield Sailing Club was abandoned because the snow stopped people from travelling (does that happen in the Scandinavian countries?), so we have a picture of the real winner! We have some new Europe sailors in the UK this year, and some who are coming back to Europes after a long gap in another class. Also there will be a UK sailor at the Youth Europeans in Italy. This will be the first for many years, so I'm sure he will be made very welcome and he will have a good time. We are looking forward to the UK Open Championships at Lancing on 26 and 27 July. We have had enquiries from Belgium and Holland so we hope to have some strong competition from overseas. Our Northern Championship at South Shields was won by Gareth Williams, and we have just had our Southern Championship at the Weymouth & Portland Sailing Academy, home of the 2012 Olympic regatta. Report of the UK Europe Southern Championship at the WPNSA Regatta It was the Europe Southern Championships, as well as the National Championships for the Moths, Wanderers and Devon Yawls, and just another Open for the Bytes, Isos, Laser 4000s, Buzzes and 14s! That made over 120 boats, not counting the 30-strong Scorpion fleet at Castle Cove, and assorted Oppies, Picos etc doing there own thing. So it was a busy weekend in Portland Harbour, and fortunately there was enough wind for everyone all the time on the Saturday and most of the time on the Sunday as well. Given the breezy outlook, Gareth Williams was showing signs of confidence at the pre-race briefing, until Chris Gill made his usual last-minute appearance in the dinghy park! Launching took a while as we waited for thirty-odd foiling Moths to get away. Once on the water the duel between Gareth and Chris began in earnest and lasted for the day, each searching for a little bit extra, so small was the margin between them. In race one Chris touched the windward mark to let Gareth through, Gareth got the better of the runs in the windy race two, but Chris pulled out something extra in the last race of the day. Richard Eagleton was third in each one, close in the last race but a whole leg adrift in the other two. Katie Mapplebeck and Chris Wilkinson and Natalie Campbell took turns at fourth place, but there was a lot of swimming done in race two, and some non-appearances in race three. So the day ended 2-1 to a very chuffed Gareth! Sunday was an earlier start, our turn to be first at the launching ramp! The wind was in the north so some shifts were to be expected. Richard and Chris Wilkinson got the best shift of the day when having been spat out of the back of the start they both tacked to the right and got lifted almost up to the windward mark, all according to their pre-race strategy. Katie briefly threatened Richard's domination of third spot, and Brett Hill, new kid on the block, almost snatched a fourth place in race four, while Jane Stevens never quite got to grips with the downwind legs. Meanwhile at the front of the fleet Gareth's cheery grin slipped slightly as Chris Gill found its touch, going faster and faster (or was Gareth going slower?) as the wind eased to score three firsts for the day. Friday's training day, coached by Dave Cockerell and funded largely by the RYA support for class associations was a great success for those that attended. Dave being a former expert Europe sailor had some good ideas about sail trim and mast rake, as well as bringing all his coaching skills as the national Topper coach. We all enjoyed the day, so did Dave, and if we had a spare boat he would have loved to join in! Southern Championship results 1. Chris Gill 6 2. Gareth Williams 8 3. Richard Eagleton 15 4. ![]() FROM The Europe remains the primary dinghy for 15-19 old sailors in After a brief set-back following the loss of Olympic status, the Europe has regained its status as the only real alternative for ambitious young sailors in The Norwegian Europe annual regatta program consists of a series of local regattas, the National Championship and five national ranking regattas where the sailors are ranked toward possible participation in the three main international events: the World Championship, the Junior European Championship and the Nordic Junior Championship. The total number of ranked sailors averages about 100 so there is strong competition to qualify. This year, the national ranking will be completed with a two-day regatta at Hanko on May 24-25, and the full results will be reported on our WEB site: http://www.europajolle.no/ in the subsection Ranking/Resultater. We look forward to seeing you all this summer at the Championships! Atle Lorhmann PR Contact, Europe Class |

![]() One thing we love to do is to let a Laser sailor pick up a We always hope that some Europe sailors will cross the sea to visit us. There has been an enquiry from Holland about coming to the UK Open National Championship. This is on Saturday and Sunday 26th and 27th July, with a day’s training on offer on Friday 25th. The venue is Lancing Sailing Club, a small and very friendly club on the south coast of England near Brighton. The racing is on the open sea in front of the club, and we will launch straight off the beach. You can see pictures of the club at www.lancingsc.co.uk/europe.html There is a Notice of Race and Entry Form, and soon there will be up-to-date information on camping and accommodation. All visitors will be made very welcome – don’t forget it is the UK Open as well as the UK National Championships! We also have an event at Weymouth (WPNSA), the venue for the 2012 Olympic Sailing. This is on 7th and 8th June, and all Europe sailors are very welcome. |

![]() FROM NEW ZEALAND Our summer sailing season closes down about mid April, except for the keen folk who carry on all winter. This season the 3 provincial championship regattas were held mainly in the 7-13 knot wind range in beautiful sailing conditions much to the disgust of the heavy weather experts. However, to their joy, the final regatta on the 23-24th February which was the NZ national championships was sailed in everything from 7 knots to 40 knots, I hasten to add lest you think we are expert sailors in NZ, the 40 knots thankfully was a one off one minute wonder. The forecast all weekend was for 30 knot winds, but we managed 2 races in the 18-25 knot range on Saturday before weather packed up. On Sunday we sailed 5 back to back races in surprisingly manageable wind strength of shifty, gusty conditions with a 2m swell running. On the last race a spume filled corridor of wind roared through the fleet flattening several who were unlucky enough to be in its path. Of all the classes I have sailed, I think the Europe is the most forgiving in those sorts of conditions. This Champ was a first for several of the sailors, many said they had never sailed so fast on reaches or runs before, and many of the harbour or lake sailors had never experienced swells that big. It was also, (much to my amusement); a first for one of our sailors who while capsized discovered that not only had his venture bailer been efficiently sucking out water but also a long length of mainsheet. It was no small feat to poke it back against the flap in high wind and seas, somewhat similar to pulling your arm out of a shark’s mouth. While browsing the IECU news, it is noticeable that many countries are looking to the very young sailors for growth; over here we have found a niche in the seemingly very old. Whereas Europes overseas seem to be a stepping stone from Optimists to other classes, in NZ they are a stepping stone to radio controlled model yachting. Of course, I am exaggerating but we have found that the class suits women and men approaching middle age and this also gives some stability within the class. Our age range is from 16 to 64, with the biggest group in the 30-50 age. Our NZ representative in the last two Olympics, Sarah Dunn (formerly Macky) and husband Cameron, are expecting their first child mid March. Although Sarah no longer sails Europes, she has been our lifeline in regularly passing on her knowledge of all aspects of Europe sailing to us newcomers, knowledge that probably would have been lost forever in NZ because of our isolation. We are grateful for Sarah and Cameron for sharing their knowledge amidst the hectic schedule of Cameron’s professional sailors life. We wish our fellows sailors around the world fair winds and lots of fun as your seasons either are close to the end or close to starting. ![]() FROM BRAZIL Here we have been training a lot, but no competition since January 20th. |
![]() FROM ARGENTINE SEMANA DE MAR DEL PLATA 2008 From 7th to 10th of that last February, took place in the Mar del Plata Balneary, situated in the South of the Buenos Aires Province, The Semana de Mar de Plata Championship organized by the Argentine Yacht Club. We had to face very strong winds. The first day of regatta we sailed two races with an East wind and a very nice wave. The second day we sailed inside the harbour, with windgusts over 30 knots. The third day we sailed three races at sea and the fourth day out of the harbour but in front of the beach, very near the coast, and we had three types of waves, the wind one, the sea one and the bounce of the coast ; all of us went out for the first race but for the second one only could finish Ronnie and I ; a young fellow from the Misiones province, Juan Tesone, tried to finish the second race, the wind was blowing 30 knots already, but he couldn’t go on in spite of his courage, congratulations Juan. Then in the third race only Ronnie and I were there, like a match race, finally I won the championship after a big fight with Ronnie, from the local club, and Mariano Nazarov, who sailed a good championship, finished third. It has been a very hard championship where, most of all, the physical state of each sailor and the control of the boat were put to the test. I wish you the best winds from Argentine: RESULTS AFTER 10 RACES 1. Alfredo Bafico Trench 10 2. Ronnie Jenkins 12 3. Mariano A. Nasarov 28 4. Constanza Vazquez 51 5. Juan Tesone 64 Up to 14 sailors.
